DNA Testing Horses

When Epona was born, we got preoccupied keeping her alive and didn’t get her registered with the APHC. Four years later, we are starting the process and it begins with getting her dam’s DNA.

I paid for the kit and it was emailed a week later with the instructions to send 75 hairs with the root bulb attached. (Photo above).

I took the samples from her mane and pulled straight up as close as I could to the roots. She didn’t seem even slightly concerned.

I truly can’t tell, however, if there is enough of the bulb in this sample.

Should I pull tail hair instead?

I know some of you have done this before, but this is my first time. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I have zero knowledge. But if you’re on FB there is a ‘horse colour genetics’ group and they could probably give good advice.

    1. I’ll look into that. I’m hoping to mail these off tomorrow after the holiday.

  2. Hard to tell in a photo. Looks like you got some good ones. We pulled from both mane and tail.

    1. I went out yesterday and pulled some from the tail and they looked about the same. Some of them have distinct bulbs and others do not. I wonder if they ask for 75 because they will reject most of them and go for the best samples.

  3. They ask for lots so that they get a few good ones. I think you have plenty in that sample. I dna test all my horses- I still have to do the parentage verification one on Rally before breeding her. I already did the disease panel test on her before I bought her.

    1. Thanks for that information. You are the expert! I ended up grabbing more hair and got it off via Fed Ex Tuesday. Notification they received it this morning. We have to do Epona next.
