More Herd Dynamics

At  no time are herd dynamics more on brilliant display than when you release a new horse into the herd. (Or, when one escapes into the herd. See previous post.)  For fun, tell me what you see in these sequential photos.  Don't worry about names, colors will do.

  1. It's interesting that Beautiful Girl was the one to allow him to enter the herd. Also interesting that Foxy has moved up in rank to hang with the leaders.

    1. Cowgirl sends Beautiful to do her bidding. Beautiful can read Cowgirl's every intention. I've not seen 2 horses more symbiotic. Cowgirl allowed Foxy to take lead mare position the moment we released her, but she still defines the rules of her position and enforces them. Basically, it looks like Cowgirl is #2, but she is definitely the actual leader.

    2. The #2 horse is usually the one who is the enforcer.

    3. That would be Beautiful. Foxy eats first, but that's about it. So, I'm not sure where she is in the order.

  2. That's such a peaceful looking pasture with the pine trees in the background, and I like all the color in your herd. Thanks for the panoramas.

    1. She's a tough horse who will do Cowgirl's bidding, even if it kills her. Very loyal.

  4. Beautiful pasture. Looks like they're working it out and Beautiful Girl is right there to help them decide how to do it.

    1. Yes, she is. Cowgirl is her mama and she lives her. I hope my daughter never separates them. Cowgirl is such a great leader of our herd...thanks to being raised by Red.

  5. Great photos of your herd! Such a nice pasture to call home. It's hard for me to tell what is going on, other then a lot! I was surprised to see the palomino hanging back. After reading the comments, it makes sense. Everyone & thing looks so peaceful, with plenty of room to spread out.

    1. Yeah, Cowgirl seems like she's not doing anything when, in fact, she's orchestrating their every move. So, the new mare, Foxy's, position is probably TBD To be determined. I'm thinking she'll take Shadow's old spot as alpha, Cowgirl will take Red's as passive or true leader and Beautiful will move to Cowgirl's old spot as enforcer.
