It's Looking Like An Abscess

Our farrier came out this morning at 8:00 am because we wanted to rule out the hooves before moving on to the next step.  When he put the hoof testers on the fronts,  he got sensitivity in both.  A little trimming exposed what also looked like a bruise on the front right toe...or a possible abscess.

We cancelled the vet appointment for now and instead we're going to soak her feet in Epson salts, give her Bute and watch her for the next three days. Hopefully, whatever it is will reveal itself.

Last night I gave her a very small dose of Banamine and she came back to about 100 percent soundness.

As usual, we'll have to wait and see, but things are looking up.

  1. That would be great! Abscesses are no darn fun, but SO much better...

    Keeping things crossed for you.

    1. Yeah, you know things are bad when you're happy to hear your horse has a plain 'ol abscess!

  2. Finger's crossed for you that it's just the abscess. That would be the best scenario. Good luck and I hope it blows soon.

  3. Definitely hope its an abscess. And I have seen horses with this problem appear incoordinated--don't know why, exactly--maybe trying so hard to favor the very painful foot?

    1. I guess so, especially if the soreness is in both front feet. They don't have the usual limp from one. Something happened in those feet--possibly laminitis (which I haven't ever dealt with before). The farrier asked if she'd anything unusual done--change in diet, fever/infection, or immunizations. When it started, she'd been on green grass.....sooooo...maybe the grass. May never know.

  4. Yay! I know what it's like to be SO relieved to find out a problem is "just an abscess." I hope you're right and that's all it is.

  6. Abscesses are such a pain. But a super easy thing to treat. My Paint just had an abscess last week {she is super prone to abscesses] and she is doing good now. Hopefully that is all it is and nothing else!!
