The Funny Looking Mask

This seems to help a little, but I can't wait until his meds come in.  The sun came out and so did the head-shaking.  He seemed to do well all morning with his mask on, but the mask came off and he started the head bobbing and nose scratching.  I put the mask back on, but it hasn't gone away.  I'm watching him now.  If it doesn't go away soon, I'll put him back in his stall.  He gets 100 percent relief in there.

This is a funny looking mask, isn't it?

  1. It is sort of odd looking but if it helps I'm sure he's not looking in the mirror at himself. Cowboy the Alien...Hope his meds come in soon and offer him some relief. Poor guy.

  2. Yeah, it seems to offer him relief. He stopped the head shaking after a little time wearing it. :)

    1. Me too--that mask doesn't want to stay on.

  4. Poor guy. He's got to go into hibernation while the rest of us are coming out and enjoying the sunshine.

    1. I was thinking the same thing: what a horrible condition, to be allergic to the sun!

  5. Poor Cowboy. I hope he did better as the day went on. And hey, I think he looks kind of cute with that mask, very cool, like a pair of shades :)

    1. He does look cute...always. He did good all day as long as the mask stayed on, but as soon as it would slip off he'd have issues. I ordered another one tonight from cashel. Looks like a better fit, but only blocks 70 percent of the rays. :/ Someone needs to invent a better system!! Maybe I should.

  7. Can you modify this mask? Maybe some velcro in a better spot?

    1. I'm working with it right now to see if there's something I can do to make it stay on. The last adjustment worked until I took it off this morning. Trial and Error, but yes, I could modify the existing mask. I wondering though, those goggles still allow for sun to get in through the sides--would it be possible to sew something into a regular Cashel riding mask that blocks out 90 percent of the rays but covers the entire front of the mask? I'm examining this Guardian mask (the goggle portion) and it just looks like black netted, dense material of some type. I'll take a picture of it.

  10. He might look like a bug, but if it keeps the light from bugging him, that's okay.

  12. Bummer that the bug mask won't stay on. I think he looks darn cute with it though. Any good news to report?

  13. Those masks sure are funny looking. I wasn't real happy with mine either, but didn't have trouble with it coming off.

When I was trying to come up with a better mask than that one, I bought some shade cloth. You can order it by the foot online with different levels of protection. I never did get around to making anything with mine though.

I sure hope it helps him! I can't wait to hear how the meds work too. Lots of things to be hopeful about with your boy.

    1. Andrea, thanks for the suggestion!! I'm going to try it and sew it into my favorite Cashel mask.

  14. Sending lots of good vibes and juju Cowboy's way. Hope the meds and the fly mask help him. The mask reminds me a little of a fly face, just with the area around the eyes. :) Is he with the other horses? Maybe he is getting helped out of his mask. ;)
